Help me pick a pie plate...

I’m very excited about the pie-off, but I have a small confession to make: I don’t even own a pie plate. I have only made two pies in my entire life and this was about ten years ago when I made one apple and one pumpkin pie for Thanksgiving. I had a couple friends over to help me and I used pie crust mix and pumpkin filling from a can. I did not own a rolling pin at the time, which made the experience a little overwhelming. My kitchen skills are much improved from those days, but I have yet to make another go at pie making so I’ve never needed to buy a pie plate.

I’ve been looking at the various pie plate options on Amazon.com, and it appears to me that I can select from three categories; glass, ceramic and metal. I’m sure that there is a difference between the three but I have no idea what that would be. So I could really use your help in deciding what to get. Here is what I’m considering:

The metal pans are perforated, which I hear can give you a flakier crust. The pyrex dish is pretty much the gold standard in pie plates. And I really like the red and white ceramic dish for it's looks.

What do you think? Which one should I get?

You should definitely buy all three kinds.

I find the pyrex heats up too much and makes the pie crust become hard. I like the metal ones. But since you are my competitor, I hope you buy the pyrex!!

Personally, I think plain old metal works best.

I'm going the pyrex. Perfect crust every time.

I have to admit, I'm a sucker for pretty containers. I'd be tempted by the red ceramic if I were in the market for a new one. But I'm sticking with my old glass deep-dish pyrex pans that were my grandmothers!

I have a blue one just like that red one, but I only use it for baking brie in puff pastry.

I think the metal ones are more practical but you should definitely get the red one - you will find things to do with it.

Pyrex all the way...my mom is the pie queen amongst our family and friends, and she's never made a bad pie using pyrex.
